The Perfect Compliment - How to Give it Today!

If you fill a home, a school, or a workplace with words such as lazy, stupid and bad that is the behaviour which follows, but if you use words such as courage, helpfulness, and flexibility, you are empowering those behaviours, whether in a child, an employee or a friend. Linda Kavelin Popov

Words are so important. We can use them to for good or evil.  We can use them  flippantly or with great care.

The above quote rings very true and makes us realize that words can have the power to affect our day and our life, not only in regards to how we speak to other people but also in how we speak to ourselves. Is that tape repeating itself in your head doing harm or helping?

Today, I ran across a simple plan to bestow a compliment on another person and I thought - hey, we can use this when we speak to ourselves, too. Why not?  Do you presently get complimented too much? I doubt it.  Why not use the following technique and the beauty and power of positive words to sincerely brighten someone else day (not to mention your own!).

According to Wikipedia a virtue is a positive trait or quality subjectively deemed to be morally excellent and thus is valued as a foundation of principle and good moral being. Personal virtues are characteristics valued as promoting individual and collective well being. The opposite of virtue is vice

Some examples of virtues include honesty, courage, compassion, generosity, fidelity, integrity, fairness, self-control, and prudence.

We all possess virtues and know others who sparkle, too.  Today it is the day we acknowledge them!

HOW TO DO A VIRTUES ACKNOWLEDGMENT:

After you use the person's name, there are three parts to an acknowledgment.

1) You say: a stem or opening phrase (I acknowledge you for your..., I saw your ..., you showed..., you used...,)

2) a virtue (focus on one main virtue) and

3) how the virtue is being shown (give as much detail as possible on how you see it being used in the present moment).

Examples:

Harold, it was / kind / of you to pick up mother and take her shopping.

Emma, you were really / patient / to wait for everyone to gather their information for the report.

Beth, I see your / generosity / when you give of your time to work at the food bank twice a week.

Greg, I honor you for your / reliability / in managing our work schedule for everyone’s benefit.

You get the idea!  Now how will you get this off the screen and into your life?
